No. 7 Wai'anae runs past Nanakuli

By Kalani Takase
Advertiser Staff Writer

NANAKULI — No. 7 Wai'anae used a relentless ground attack — led by Danny Kekoanui's 160 yards on 20 carries — to wear down Nanakuli, 20-0, last night.

The Seariders won their third straight to improve to 3-2, 3-0 in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red West Conference. The Golden Hawks fell to 1-4, 0-3 in the Red West.

Kekoanui led 10 Wai'anae rushers, who combined for 229 yards on 39 carries.

"Danny ran the ball so hard tonight," Wai'anae coach Dan Matsumoto said. "What an effort he had tonight. The (offensive) line helped out a lot, but it was a lot of effort on his part, as well."

The Seariders' stingy defense gave up just 40 yards, five first downs and came up with three turnovers — two that were turned into Wai'anae scores. They did not allow a third-down conversion (0-for-10) by the Golden Hawks.

"The defense played well," Matsumoto said. "We had several missed tackles, but overall the defense played well."

The Wai'anae defense put the pressure on early. Matelau Sekona's sack of Chadez Alvarado-Meyers to start Nanakuli's second offensive drive led to an interception by Donovan Tuisano two plays later. After his return to the Golden Hawks' 15-yard line, Dillon Cadirao scored on a 2-yard run two plays later. It was set up by a 24-yard completion from Maurice Simpson to Danny Kekoanui after a holding penalty moved the ball back to the 26.

Wai'anae capitalized on another Nanakuli first half turnover, as Kekoanui rumbled in for a 6-yard touchdown run that was set up by Brenton Dias' interception at the Golden Hawks' 36-yard line. The Seariders took a 14-0 lead into halftime.

"The O-line made some blocks and they were able to wear down the defense," Kekoanui said. He also had three receptions for 61 yards — both game highs.

Nanakuli was held to 13 yards of total offense in the first half, despite 12 Wai'anae penalties for 97 yards.

The Seariders were penalized a total of 18 times for 152 yards.

"That's something we need to work on," Matsumoto said. "Hopefully we get better every game, that's something we're working toward. We just have to work harder and stop eliminating our mistakes."

Wai'anae added a late score on a 4-yard run by Damien Delacruz.

It was the first meeting between the neighboring rivals since 2005.

With the win, the Seariders keep pace with Leilehua, which defeated Pearl City, 33-12, last night.
