Kalδheo edges Radford, 13-10, in OIA White

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

Dwayne Mitchell caught a touchdown pass and made two interceptions, including one with 1:25 remaining in the game, to help visiting Kalaheo hold off Radford, 13-10, in O'ahu Interscholastic Association action last night at John Velasco Stadium.

The Mustangs remained unbeaten at 6-0 overall and 5-0 in the OIA's White Conference. Radford fell to 3-2, 3-1.

Mitchell's 30-yard TD reception from Phil Tauai gave Kalaheo a 13-3 lead midway through the third quarter, but the extra-point attempt hit the right upright and ricocheted out. The Rams cut it to 13-10 with 3:21 remaining in the game after Doug Brown's 13-yard touchdown pass to Brad Osborne and Tevita Baravilala's extra point.

Radford then forced a three-and-out by the Mustangs on the ensuing possession and started its final series on its own 9-yard line with 1:48 left. But two plays later, Mitchell intercepted a pass to the far sideline and Kalaheo was able to run out the clock on three downs.

Mitchell said the Mustangs needed to focus after allowing the Rams to score their second touchdown only two plays after a botched punt attempt gave Radford the ball on the Kalaheo 36.

"We knew we messed up, but we had to keep our heads in the game," said Mitchell, a 5-foot-10, 175-pound senior. "We knew we had to step up and not give up."

Both teams had several golden scoring opportunities in the first half, only to turn it over or lose the ball on downs. The only score in the first two quarters came on Baravilala's 26-yard field goal with 5:48 remaining in the half.

The Mustangs took a 7-3 lead after taking the second-half kickoff and marching 80 yards in just six plays, culminating in Tauai's 10-yard quarterback keeper.

"We got inside the 5 twice in the first half but fumbled it away," Kalaheo coach Chris Mellor said. "But Radford is tough, they're well-coached and they brought it harder than anybody we've played so far."
