Meeting Wednesday on East Maui stream flow

The Maui News

HA'IKU, Maui — The state Commission on Water Resource Management will hear recommendations for instream flow standards for eight East Maui streams in a meeting at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Ha'iku Community Center, The Maui News reported today.

The streams are: Honopou; Hanehoi and Puolua (Huelo); Pi'ina'au; Palauhulu; Waiokamilo; Kualani; Waikani; and East and West Wailuanui.

The commission is required to establish instream flow standards for all streams in Hawai'i, to provide adequate water flow for the habitat for native fish and wildlife as well as for recreation, scenic views and other beneficial stream uses.

East Maui taro growers have challenged stream diversions by East Maui Irrigation Co., which uses plantation-era ditches to channel water to Central Maui sugar cane fields. Diverted water from the East Maui streams also goes to domestic and agricultural uses in the Upcountry system and for Kula Agricultural Park.

Commission staff members will present their findings and recommendations at Wednesday's meeting.
