Patacchia surfs into third round

Advertiser Staff

Fred Patacchia Jr. of O'ahu's North Shore advanced to the third round of the Quiksilver Pro France men's surfing contest yesterday.

The second round was completed in 2- to 3-foot waves at Hossegor, France.

Patacchia defeated Australia's Luke Munro, 13.0-10.23.

"It just so happened that I got the right waves," Patacchia said. "Luke has been surfing good all year — he actually took me out in Tahiti, so I had to get him back for that."

The Irons brothers from Kaua'i were eliminated yesterday.

Andy Irons withdrew from the event, and Bruce Irons lost to Australian Mick Campbell.

Hawai'i surfers Roy Powers and Pancho Sullivan advanced to the third round on Saturday.

The contest is the eighth of 11 stops on the 2008 World Championship Tour.
