2 Eagles offensive stars injured against Steelers

Associated Press

Philadelphia's two most critical offensive players were hurt in a win over Pittsburgh, which also had its quarterback dinged.

Donovan McNabb returned from a rough hit, but do-everything star Brian Westbrook strained his right ankle and didn't return.

The All-Pro running back appeared to get hurt while hurdling a teammate on a 2-yard run. Coach Andy Reid said X-rays showed the ankle wasn't broken, but Westbrook will have an MRI today.

Westbrook did not speak with reporters but was on crutches in the locker room after the game.

One play before Westbrook got hurt in the Eagles' 15-6 win over Pittsburgh, McNabb was visibly shaken up after getting sacked. He played the rest of the half and took a hard hit to the chest late in the second quarter. McNabb stayed in the locker room after the half, but returned during Philadelphia's second series in the third quarter.

Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger hurt his throwing hand when he was sacked by Brian Dawkins, fumbling inside the 20.

He was replaced by Byron Leftwich when the Steelers got the ball with just over 2 minutes left. Coach Mike Tomlin said X-rays on Roethlisberger's hand were negative and he's expected to play next week.

LIONS

QB KITNA SPRAINS KNEE

Jon Kitna sprained his right knee in the final minutes of Detroit's 31-13 loss to San Francisco yesterday, and the Lions didn't know how long their veteran quarterback would be sidelined.

Kitna, who went 15 of 30 for 146 yards, was hurt while getting pulled down on a sack by 49ers linebacker Parys Haralson with 1:50 left in the fourth quarter.

"It feels pretty bad right now," said Kitna, who threw one TD pass and one interception. "I just got beat up all day."

Dan Orlovsky replaced Kitna, a 12-year pro.

Also, Lions guard Stephen Peterman broke his hand during the game.

RAVENS

SAFETY LANDRY OK

A CT scan on Baltimore safety Dawan Landry indicated that he was OK after being taken from the field on a cart yesterday after taking a knee to the helmet during the second quarter against Cleveland.

"Everything is normal," Ravens spokesman Kevin Byrne said.

Landry was hurt trying to tackle Jamal Lewis, whose knee hit Landry in the head. Landry lay motionless for several minutes before being taken from the field with the facemask removed from his helmet and his head immobilized.

ELSEWHERE

Referee returns: Back in action after his admitted incorrect call last week, NFL referee Ed Hochuli worked yesterday's game between the Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Ravens. Hochuli's call last Sunday played a key role in Denver's 39-38 win over San Diego. Denver quarterback Jay Cutler dropped back to pass, the ball slipped from his hand and a San Diego player recovered. But Hochuli, who has refereed two Super Bowls, ruled it an incomplete pass.

Colts: Indianapolis lost right guard Dan Federkeil in the first half with a shoulder injury and cornerback Marlin Jackson in the second half with a rib injury against Jacksonville.

Jaguars: Jacksonville lost receiver Dennis Northcutt in the first half with a leg strain and safety Reggie Nelson with a bruised knee in the third quarter.

Browns: Cleveland linebacker Shantee Orr sustained a concussion against Baltimore in the third quarter and did not return.

Raiders: Oakland defensive tackle Gerard Warren did not return after hurting his neck in the second half against Buffalo.

Redskins: Washington tackle Stephon Heyer sprained his left shoulder in a win over Arizona.
