University of Hawai'i freshman outside hitter Kanani Herring was in a walking boot and on crutches yesterday following Rainbow Wahine volleyball practice and the announcement that she was named the Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week.

"She just tweaked her ankle in practice this morning, and her status is unknown at this point," Hawai'i coach Dave Shoji said. "She will be making the trip and she'll probably practice tomorrow."

Herring was named WAC Player of the Week yesterday, her first weekly conference honor.

She averaged 4.57 kills, 4.57 digs and 0.57 blocks per set while hitting .367 as she led the Rainbow Wahine (9-2) to wins over Idaho and Boise State last week. She had 22 kills and 17 digs while hitting .409 against Idaho. She then added another double-double with 10 kills and 15 digs against Boise State.

"She had another good weekend, so I think she's deserving of the Player of the Week," Shoji said.

Also yesterday, the Rainbow Wahine remained at seventh in the American Volleyball Coaches Association poll. Penn State (12-0) remained at No. 1 and received all 60 first-place votes.
