'Peak' day for jellyfish influx light in Waikiki

Advertiser Staff

Ocean Safety officials are reporting a very small influx of box jellyfish in Waikiki today with between 200 and 300 found, Emergency Services spokesman Bryan Cheplic said.

"It's supposed to be the peak day today but we'll check again tomorrow," Cheplic said.

Cheplic said there have been a few stings reported this morning, but more could happen because of the incoming tide.

"We're posting signs in Waikiki because of the incoming tide even though there haven't been many jellyfish found," Cheplic said.

Today is the 10th day after the full moon, typically the largest influx day. Last month, however, the 10th day was also light but the 11th day saw more than 1,000 box jellyfish wash up in Waikiki.

Kaua'i County officials reported that box jellyfish have been seen this morning along the shore fronting the Marriott's Wai'ohai Beach Club. Beachgoers are advised to avoid the area. Warning signs are posted.
