Salutes

  • Winners of the Na Moolelo Kulaiwi writing contest for Hawai'i public schools are: autobiography/biography, Bessie DeMello of Lihikai Elementary; nonfiction, Marvalee Maile Mossman of Pukalani Elementary and Kaohu Cazinha of 'Ahuimanu Elementary; fiction, Stanford Alika Bajo of Hale Kula Elementary.

    Honorable mention awardees were Patricia Hanohano of Kane'ohe Elementary, Filomena Miyamoto of Kea'au Elementary and Ivanelle Choy of Kahala Elementary.

  • John Pyun, a senior at Kaiser High School, is a distinguished finalist in the 2008 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program. He was recently honored for volunteering during the past three summers at King Lunalilo Adult Day Care Center, where he led activities and games, played guitar, performed break dances for residents, and developed a Web site for the center.

  • Dr. Leslie "Les" Correa has been promoted to the position of vice president of institutional research and academic support at Hawai'i Pacific University. Correa will handle the collection and analysis of university data and manage course and classroom scheduling.

  • The American Institute of Architects 2008 Design Awards winners and their projects are:

    Honolulu Fire Department Headquarters Complex, architects Lorrin Matsunaga and Gordon Wallace of Urban Works Inc.

    40 South School St., architect Philip White of Philip K. White & Associates.

    Kuki'o Golf Club (North Kona), architect Mark de Reus of de Reus Architects.
