Police seek help ID'ing body found in Hilo Bay

Big Island police are asking for the public's help in identifying a man found floating at Kuhio Wharf in Hilo Bay Tuesday.

Police were called at about 4 p.m. after crew members of the Pride of America cruise ship docked at Pier 1 saw what appeared to be a body floating in the water near the ship's mooring. The condition of the remains suggests that the body had been in the water for some time, police said.

The dead man was wearing faded denim trousers and a reddish mesh football jersey with the name "DOUGLAS" printed on the back. Police said he may be Caucasian, and is approximately 5-feet 9-inches tall with a medium build.

An autopsy to determine the exact cause of death has been scheduled for tomorrow.

Police ask anyone with information about the body of the circumstances surrounding the death to call Det. John Rodrigues at 961-2382 or the police non-emergency number at 935-3311.

Tipsters who wish to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona. All Crime Stoppers information is kept confidential.
