Castle pounces on McKinley, 40-0

By Michael Tsai
Advertiser Staff Writer

On a homecoming night to remember, the Castle football team gave its students and returning alumni a little of everything to cheer about last night in a 40-0 romp over McKinley.

"Our defense played well and we got some point production, which was nice," said Castle head coach Nelson Maeda. "The ball bounced our way tonight. It's been a trying season so far because we haven't gotten a lot of those bounces. Tonight we did."

Senior quarterback Blake Rapozo led the Black Knights, completing 9-of-20 pass attempts for 227 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Teammate Shaydon Kehano led all receivers, tallying four receptions for 161 yards and two touchdowns.

The Black Knights scored all of their points in the first half, putting pressure on the Tigers early by opening the game with a no-huddle offense designed to get the Black Knights in rhythm early.

The strategy paid off with a series of quick gains that helped to set up a 32-yard field goal by Derek Hillegass.

Hillegass, the Knights' point-after ace, would have a busy half.

Castle scored its first touchdown with 1:59 left to go in the first quarter when junior Hans Reppuhn zig-zagged through four defenders and exploded to the goal line for a 57-yard touchdown.

Castle picked up steam in the second, sparked by a 2-yard touchdown run by junior Jaysen Ferreira.

Less than 10 seconds later, with the Tigers pinned at the five-yard line by a botched return attempt, the Knights defense got into the act, swarming the McKinley quarterback in the end zone for a safety that gave Castle an 18-0 lead.

On the Knights' ensuing possession, Rapozo connected with junior wide receiver Kehano, who appeared locked up by three defenders — one of whom had a firm fistful of his jersey — before powering his way free for a 30-yard touchdown.

"I just followed my blockers and watched for where the holes were," Kehano said, laughing. "When they grabbed me, I just kept pumping my legs trying to get those extra yards."

Reppuhn picked off a Theodore Spensor pass to get the ball back for Castle, and the Black Knights again capitalized, this time on a 25-yard touchdown run by junior Lowen Rogers.

The Black Knights' final score was perhaps the most spectacular. Rapozo seemed to be in trouble when he was forced to scramble for an errant snap from Castle's own 20. With defenders closing in on him, Rapozo turned a wide arc, evaded a tackle near the 5-yard line, ran to the 15 then threw a bomb for a wide-open Kehano, who completed the unlikely play.

"I saw the whole defense coming in for the fumble so I just took off the other way, away from the defense," Kehano said. "They started pointing at me, but it was too late because my quarterback found me."
