Workshops set for Kauai seniors with chronic health conditions

Associated Press

A series of workshops entitled "Ke Ala Pono: Healthy Living" is being offered for

seniors 60 and older with chronic health conditions on Kaua'i.

The series is sponsored by the county's Agency on Elderly Affairs and the state Department of Health and starts Wednesday. It will be held every Wednesday for six weeks at the Lihu'e Civic Center, Pi'ikoi Building, from 9 to 11:30 a.m.

Registration is limited to 16 participants and their caregivers.

Participants will be introduced to practical skills for healthy living while managing their

ongoing health condition.

Among the topics to be covered are communicating effectively; tips for eating well;

relaxation; exercise; developing action plans; problem solving; and managing symptoms or problems such as fatigue, pain and isolation.

Although the current series is nearly full, anyone interested will be placed on a waiting

list for future workshops planned for next year.

The Healthy Living program was developed by Stanford University for people with

chronic health problems, such as arthritis, diabetes, emphysema, heart conditions, high blood pressure, etc.
