Jarrett Arakawa threw for 204 yards and four touchdowns and 'Iolani's defense limited Damien to 45 yards rushing yesterday as the Raiders won, 33-6, in Interscholastic League of Honolulu football action at Eddie Hamada Field.

The Raiders, ranked No. 9 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, improved to 6-1 overall and 4-0 in the ILH. Damien fell to 5-2, 2-2.

After a scoreless first quarter, Arakawa completed a 46-yard touchdown pass to Kela Marciel, who was running a post route down the left sideline. Andrew Skalman's extra point made it 7-0 with 4:59 remaining in the half.

After Damien went three-and-out on the ensuing possession, Arakawa completed a 13-yard pass to Trevyn Tulonghari on first down, then threw a swing pass to the left sideline to Marciel, who dodged several defenders while running toward the middle of the field and then dashed to the end zone for a 58-yard TD. Skalman's PAT made it 14-0 with 2:42 left in the half.

"Kela is one of the best playmakers in the state, so when he's in the game we want to try to get the ball in his hands," Arakawa said of Marciel, who starts at cornerback and sees only spot duty at receiver. "When I see him in one-on-one coverage, I'm confident he can get open."

Arakawa had been struggling to find a rhythm until the first touchdown drive, completing only 2 of his first 11 passes.

"We had trouble getting into the flow, but give Damien credit — they did a good job mixing coverages and bringing pressure," Raiders coach Wendell Look said.

The Monarchs closed to 14-6 two plays into the second half, when Kamu Valmoja intercepted a pass on the left sideline and ran 28 yards to the end zone.

'Iolani stretched the lead to 21-6 with 7:59 left the third quarter after Kellen Imada took a screen pass from Arakawa and ran 63 yards for a TD.

Breland Almadova caused a fumble on the kickoff that was recovered by Cody Petro-Sakuma at the Damien 31, and Skalman kicked a 26-yard field goal to push it to 24-6 with 6:14 left in the quarter.

Later, Matthew Padaca recovered a fumbled punt return at the Monarchs' 20 and, three plays later, Arakawa found Tulonghari on a 3-yard slant pattern to make it 30-6 with a minute remaining in the third quarter. After a fumbled long snap, the two-point conversion run failed.

Skalman's 24-yard field goal with 9:21 left in the game made it 33-6.

Damien played without running back Brenan Furtado, who ranks second in the state in rushing. Furtado had some swelling in his right knee earlier this week and was on the sideline with crutches.

"He should be OK, but we didn't want to chance it," Monarchs coach Wally Aina said. "We still stuck with our game plan, but (the Raiders) just played good, aggressive, sound football."
