Report of explosion causes evacuation in Mä'ili

Police tonight are evacuating several homes along a Ma'ili street following a report earlier in the day that an explosive device had detonated.

Residents on Heleuma Street between Laulele and Ho'okele streets are being asked to leave their homes while police and the fire department investigate. Police spokesman Major Frank Fujii said someone reported hearing an explosion today and several hours later a neighbor reported that a person in one of the homes on Heleuma Street had blown himself up.

Police have been unable to confirm the explosion, but Fujii said before officers can enter the residence they want to be sure there are no explosive devices in the home. The police bomb squad, as well as HFD's Hazmat team, are at the scene.
