Advertiser receives 23 Pa'i Awards

The Honolulu Advertiser won 10 first-place awards and swept the editorial series category at the Hawaii Publishers Association annual Pa'i Awards yesterday.

The Advertiser won 23 total awards while the Honolulu Star-Bulletin won 24, including seven top awards.

The Advertiser series recognized were, "Crossing the Line: Domestic Abuse in Hawaii Homes" by Rob Perez, which was awarded first place; "Diabetes: Hawaii's Hidden Epidemic" by Christie Wilson, Will Hoover and Dan Nakaso, second place; and "When Pedestrians Die" also by Perez, third.

The newspaper's coverage of the shutdown of Aloha Airlines garnered recognition in several categories, including spot news reporting, editorial feature, business and industry reporting, and breaking business news. Also recognized in several categories was the story of domestic violence victim Daysha Aiona-Aka written by Kevin Dayton. The story won for special section excellence, excellence in design by Russell McCrory and essay photography by Jeff Widener.

Advertiser first-place winners were:

• Spot News Reporting: "Sudden Departure," the shutdown of Aloha Airlines.

• Editorial Series: "Crossing the Line," Rob Perez.

• Editorial Opinion: "Lingle made rash choice to stir the pot on transit."

• Investigative Reporting: "Crossing the Line," Rob Perez.

• Sports Reporting: "June Jones tells friends he's leaving UH," Stephen Tsai.

• Business and Industry Reporting: "Sudden Departure."

• Breaking News: "Sudden Departure."

• Essay Photography: "Daysha's Diary," Jeff Widener.

• Excellence in Design: "Daysha's Diary," Russell McCrory.

• Special Section Excellence: "Daysha's Diary," Kevin Dayton, Jeff Widener and Russell McCrory.

The Pa'i Awards are selected by an independent panel of Mainland publishing experts and judges.
