Six Hawaii junior surfers unbeaten

Six Hawai'i surfers are undefeated at the halfway mark of the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championship.

The fourth day of the eight-day contest was completed yesterday in 6- to 8-foot waves at Salinas, Ecuador.

Hawai'i surfers still undefeated are Dylan Goodale (Boys 18), Malia Manuel (Girls 18), Leila Hurst (Girls 18), Alessa Quizon (Girls 18), Keanu Asing (Boys 16) and Kaimana Jaquias (Boys 16).

Hurst was one of the standouts in the girls division yesterday, receiving a two-wave score of 14.67 (out of 20). In another girls heat, Manuel advanced in dramatic fashion, winning her heat with a wave-score of 7.17 in the closing minutes.

The contest follows a double-elimination format. Five other Hawai'i surfers have one loss but are still in contention in the repechage rounds: Tanner Hendrickson (Boys 18), Albee Layer (Boys 18), Nage Melamed (Girls 18), Matty Costa (Boys 16) and Ezekiel Lau (Boys 16).

Kyle Galtes of Kaua'i was eliminated from the Boys 18 division yesterday.


SOFTBALL

NO. 11 HPU SPLITS

Hawai'i Pacific, which remained 11th in yesterday's NFPA Top 25 for NCAA Division II, split a doubleheader with Cal State Stanislaus yesterday in Turlock, Calif. CSUS won the first game, 3-1, but was shut out by Sea Warrior pitcher Sherise Musquiz in the second, 7-0.

Musquiz upped her record to 14-2 with a four-hitter for the Sea Warriors (28-6). She didn't give up a hit until the fifth inning, after her teammates scored three runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings. Tajia Acierto doubled in two runs and Maile Kim went 3-for-4 with two more RBIs, including a homer.

The Sea Warriors will play in the Mizuno Tournament of Champions, starting tomorrow in Turlock, Calif.

ELSEWHERE

  • Ivy Sessions had three hits and three RBIs, and Kahealani Alohikea-Betham hit a two-run homer as Brigham Young-Hawai'i beat Notre Dame de Namur, 7-2, yesterday to earn a split of a Pacific West Conference doubleheader at Belmont, Calif.

    Sessions hit a three-run homer in the first game for the Seasiders (13-25, 6-14), but the Argos (9-26-1, 1-19) scored an unearned run in the bottom of the eighth to win, 4-3.
