Ong King Arts Center celebrates its third year as this city's premier anti-club, and by that we mean art gallery, theater, performance studio, 'awa bar, concert venue, circus tent, poetry meet and after-hours hangout. It's everything but a club and it celebrates its birthday — 3 years old on April 3 — today with its usual First Friday palooza of events tonight.

As always, the entertainment list is long and this time includes performances by Family Dinner, Taimane Gardner, Quadraphonix and Bridget Gray, among others. Art will be provided by Erin McCullough, Ariel Eisen and Kamea Hadar, among others.

If it's not happening anywhere else, it's probably happening at Ong King.

5 p.m.-2 a.m. today (5-9 p.m. art gallery opening, 9 p.m.-2 a.m. performance) / Ong King Arts Center / 184 N. King St. / $10 at door / all ages

CHEAP EATS

L&L Drive-Inn at Ward Entertainment Center (597-9088) is doing its part to help us through these lean times. With mini meal combos for as low as $2.50, there's no reason not to eat local. Get a kalua pork sandwich and a small drink for $2.50, and a teri beef or curry katsu rice bowl with a small drink for $3.95 each.

SWEET BABY JAMES

James Taylor follows up his critically acclaimed "Covers" album with this shorter — and some say better — album of more covers. Titled "Other Covers," it's a seven-track triumph that drops Tuesday.

SUMMER FUN

From the makers of "Superbad" comes this coming-of-age comedy about the crew of oddballs who spend a summer working together at the local amusement park. It'll be funnier than we're making it sound. Promise. It opens in theaters everywhere today.

WHERE THE GRASS IS BLUE

Mistress of the banjo Alison Brown performs with her band and fiddler Joe Craven tonight at Paliku Theater (7:30 p.m., $15-$25, 844-BOWS). Brown gave up a career in investment banking to play the banjo. Smart woman.
