UH playing in April event on California beach

The schedule that counts is still waiting to be tweaked after conflicts with the recently released University of Hawai'i football schedule, but Rainbow Wahine volleyball is finally able to confirm it will play in the 2009 Collegiate Beach Volleyball Championship this month.

The Beach Volleyball Championship is staged by CBS College Sports Network, the American Volleyball Coaches Association and AVP Pro Beach Volleyball. It will be played in downtown Riverside, Calif., April 18, in conjunction with the AVP Crocs Tour Riverside Open. It is part of the fourth annual Alt Games, which showcases college "action sports championships."

Organizers formally released details of the volleyball exhibition yesterday.

Along with Hawai'i, ranked seventh in last season's final poll, third-ranked Nebraska, fourth-ranked Texas, 13th-ranked USC, 16th-ranked Utah, 19th-ranked San Diego, North Carolina and UC Riverside will play. Each school fields four two-player teams on the sand.

"The Collegiate Beach Volleyball Championship has been at the forefront of the movement to add Sand Volleyball as an NCAA sport," said Kathy DeBoer, AVCA executive director. "We anticipate the NCAA adding it to the Emerging Sports list for women next month, which would pave the way for colleges and universities to sponsor it as a varsity sport beginning with the 2010-2011 academic year."

Alt Games involves 10 other sports and 500 competitors from 45 schools. Shows start airing May 16, according to the release. Last year, Texas beat USC in the beach volleyball final.
