Hawaii leads world junior surfing event in Ecuador

Hawai'i moved into the lead of the team standings after the sixth day of competition of the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championship yesterday at Salinas, Ecuador.

With two days remaining, Hawai'i has a slim lead over France and South Africa.

Hawai'i has seven surfers in contention for individual titles.

In the Boys 18 division, Kaua'i's Dylan Goodale remains undefeated.

In the Boys 16 division, Kaimana Jaquias remained undefeated by advancing through the fourth round of the winners' bracket. Keanu Asing lost in the fourth round of the winners' bracket, but remained in the contest by winning his sixth-round repechage heat.

In the Girls 18 division, all four Hawai'i surfers are still in contention. Leila Hurst, Malia Manuel and Alessa Quizon are undefeated in the winners' bracket; Nage Melamed won two heats yesterday in the repechage bracket.

UH FALLS ON ROAD

Haley Gilleland had a two-run, game-winning single with two outs in the seventh as host Fresno State beat Hawai'i, 2-1, yesterday in a Western Athletic Conference game.

The Bulldogs' Morgan Melloh pitched a four-hitter with 15 strikeouts.

UH's Stephanie Ricketts allowed six hits with one walk and three strikeouts.

FSU improved to 23-13, 6-1; Hawai'i fell to 15-20, 3-4.
