Kevin Macdonald's two-run single in the fifth scored the go-ahead run, and Sam Spangler tossed 4 2/3 scoreless innings of relief and Hawai'i beat San Jose State, 7-4, today to take the Western Athletic Conference series, 3-1, before 2,001 at Les Murakami Stadium.

Scott Sobczak (4-1) gave up five runs (four earned), five hits and a walk with two strikeouts for the Spartans (20-8 overall, 1-3 WAC).

Spangler (5-0) came in after Jesse Moore threw three scoreless innings of relief for starter Connor Little, who lasted just 1 1/3 innings, allowing four runs, four hits and three walks for UH (19-10, 3-1).

The Spartans sent eight batters to the plate in a two-run first, when Little issued three walks. Craig Hertler led off with a walk and took second when Kyle Bellows grounded out to third. After Jason Martin flied out to right, Anthony Bona walked. Jacob Bruns singled to first to load the base to set up Corey Valine's two-run single to left. Danny Stienstra walked to load the bases, but Bryson Rahier grounded out to second.

San Jose State chased Little in the second. With one out, Hertler doubled to left and scored on Bellows' triple to right to make it 3-0. Jesse Moore came in for Little. Martin's ground out to short scored Bellows to make it 4-0.

With two outs in the bottom of the second, Landon Hernandez walked and Sean Montplaisir drilled a two-run home run to right to cut UH's deficit in half.

The Rainbows trimmed their deficit to one when Hernandez ripped a two out, solo home run to right-center in the fourth to make it 4-3.

Hawai'i took the lead in the fifth. Matt Roquemore led off by reaching first on shortstop Bellows' fielding error and took third on Greg Garcia's double to left-center. After a 1-0 count on Ryan Morford, Sobczak was lifted for Anthony Vega. Morford bounced out to the pitcher, freezing the runners. Vinnie Catricala was intentionally walked to load the bases. Kevin Macdonald followed with a two-run single to center to put UH ahead, 5-4, and send Catricala to third. Kolten Wong reached on a slow roller to short for a single that scored Catricala to make it 6-4 with runners at first and second. But Van Doornum struck out to end the inning.

Hawai'i got a run in the seventh with two outs. Macdonald hit a ground-rule double to left and scored on Wong's single to right to increase UH's lead to 7-4.
