SHOW BIZ
Pineda, Segundo taking the same fashion journey

By Wayne Harada
Advertiser Columnist

Arnel Pineda, Journey's lead singer, has something in common with "American Idol" local boy Jordan Segundo, beyond a Filipino heritage — duds from The Blue Buddha store in Honolulu.

Before his three Honolulu concerts, Pineda sought a trendy boutique to fetch stage finery, and go-between Jason Kina got the recommendation from Nancy Bernal, Segundo's manager. Pineda picked up some clothes from The Blue Buddha, owned by Budi Staven. When Staven attended Journey's second concert, Pineda had the clothes on.

Pineda surprised the Society of Seven LV with a visit to their Outrigger Waikiki Main Showroom last Thursday night, creating a stir among fans. "He was so humble," said SOS LVer Richard Natto.

Chef Robert Denis of Don Ho's Island Grill visited Journey backstage. The next day, Pineda and directors of Pineda's charitable group, which helps street kids in the Philippines, visited Denis at his Aloha Tower Marketplace restaurant, where they ate and soaked in the harbor view.

According to Denis, Pineda loved the Don Ho's pizza, served on a plank atop two cans of pineapple juice. ...

SHOW BITS: We took in Manoa DNA last Saturday at the new Kani Ka Pila club at the Outrigger Reef on the Beach; while D (Dad Lloyd Kawakami) and A (son Alex Kawakami) were there, N (older son Nick Kawakami) was attending a buddy's bachelor's party in Seattle. The Hawaiian-pop group shared mellow harmonics with zesty servings of local faves like Cecilio & Kapono's "Lifetime Party" and originals like "The Train." Besides the Saturday slot at Kani Ka Pila, Manoa DNA performs Fridays at Lulu's. ...

Alex Kawakami composed a commemorative song for a Hiroshima-Hawaii 50th anniversary sister-city documentary; it has been airing on Japan's Fuji TV. The doc focuses on families with a Hawai'i-Hiroshima connection — with a segment on Edith Kawakami, Lloyd's mother. ...

"Tuesdays With Morrie," starring Greg Howell as the title character in Manoa Valley Theatre's hit, clocks in at 1:15 running time. But did you know it takes Howell, an actor-makeup artist whiz, longer — like 1:45 — to "age" himself, and also help his co-star Scott Robertson get into makeup? There are three more showings: 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 4 p.m. next Sunday. Call 988-6131 or visit www.manoavalleytheatre.com. ...
