Driver killed in Likelike crash identified

Advertiser Staff

A 38-year-old Kailua man died last night when his 1998 Toyota pickup truck crashed in a Kaneohe-bound lane of Likelike Highway just before the Wilson Tunnel.

The accident occurred in the same location where three people were killed in a high-speed crash on Feb. 26, according to Emergency Medical Services spokesman Bryan Cheplic.

The accident occurred at 10:06 p.m. The man was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:29 p.m. He was identified by the medical examiner's office as Gareth Baoy, 38, of Kailua.

Police said the driver, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was the lone occupant of the truck.

They said the driver lost control of the truck which then spun sideways and crashed into a utility building at the entrance to the tunnel.

Police said speeding may have been a factor in the case, but had not determined as of yet whether alcohol or drugs were involved.
