2 seriously injured in SUV crash; driver runs away

A woman in her 30s was critically injured and a man his 20s was in stable condition last night when a sport utility vehicle they were riding in flipped over on Farrington Highway at Jade Street.

The driver fled the scene, leaving his two passengers inside, said Honolulu fire Capt. Earle Kealoha. The male passenger made his way out of the Chevrolet Trailblazer on his own but was taken to a local hospital, said Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the city's emergency services department.

The woman had to be extricated from the vehicle by a rescue crew, Kealoha said. She was taken to a trauma center, Cheplic said.

The Trailblazer apparently skidded into a wall and flipped on its side at 8:46 p.m., Kealoha said. The crash damaged a water pipe and spilled fuel onto the road.

Police re-routed traffic on Farrington and Jade while they worked to contain the spills. They reopened Farrington Highway at 10:06 p.m.
