Preps: West Virginia school district imposes curfew on sports

Associated Press

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The Kanawha County Board of Education has taken a stand against weekday sporting events that run late into the night.

The board voted Monday to ban play beyond 10 p.m. The ban doesn't include Friday and Saturday night events.

Board member Jim Crawford said the county's previous rule that prohibited individual track events and game innings from starting past 9 p.m. was largely ignored.

The new rule could interfere with spring sports such as track meets and baseball and softball games that could push up against the cutoff.

The new policy went into effect immediately, but it doesn't carry any penalties for coaches who violate it.

If coaches violate it, Crawford said they will be told not to do it again.
