Hawaii Superferry wins marketing award

Advertiser Staff and News Services

The now-defunct Hawaii Superferry was honored today at the 32nd Marketer of the Year Awards luncheon at the Hawaii Convention Center.

Hawaii Superferry won for best marketing of a new product or service.

The awards were handed out by the American Marketing Association Hawaii Chapter.

The Superferry suspended service last month after a state Supreme Court ruling said it couldn't operate before an environmental impact assessment is completed..

The boat that carried up to 800 passengers and 200 cars was the first interisland car and passenger service among the Islands. It operated between Maui and Honolulu for more than a year and had plans to add a second vessel and serve the Big Island and Kauai.

The ship is to be used elsewhere and is on its way back to Mobile, Ala., where it was built.

Other winners at today's luncheon were:

Marketer of the year: Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center.

Best nonprofit marketing: Hawaii Public Radio.

Best e-marketing: Marriott Hawaii.
