MAUI
Maintenance work to close Makawao Forest Reserve road

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources has closed the boundary gate of the Makawao Forest Reserve to conduct maintenance work.

The gate, located on Kahakapao Road, was closed as of Wednesday.

During the gate closure, DLNR will be constructing drainage improvements to the roadway. Work is expected to be completed in July.

The work was initially scheduled to begin in February but was delayed due to weather conditions.

"The area receives large amounts of rain annually, which creates a drainage problem for the heavily used road. The construction of the drainage swales will allow for better water management and help to sustain the road and drainage ditches for the future," said John Cumming, Division of Forestry and Wildlife Maui district manager.

During the closure, emergency response vehicles and County of Maui Department of Water Supply vehicles will be allowed access, but all others are asked to park below the gate and walk in.
