A day after getting its first national ranking of the season and getting its second weekly award, the Hawai'i baseball team gets back to work today.

The Rainbows (19-10) play a nonconference game at Santa Clara (10-16) today at 3 p.m., Hawai'i time. The game will be on ESPN 1420 AM.

But before they left for California yesterday, Hawai'i found itself ranked No. 23 in Baseball America's Top 25 after taking three of four from San Jose State over the weekend. The Rainbows (3-1) share first with Nevada and New Mexico State in the Western Athletic Conference after the first weekend.

Collegiate Baseball newspaper did not rank Hawai'i. Neither did ESPN/USA Today nor the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.

Also, Hawai'i's Jayson Kramer was named WAC Pitcher of the Week after combining with Lenny Linsky for the team's first shutout of the season, 3-0, against the Spartans in the series opener Friday. Kramer (2-3, 3.00 ERA) pitched eight innings, allowing six hits and two walks with two strikeouts. He is the second Rainbow this season to earn the conference award. Reliever Sam Spangler earned the award earlier this season.

But it's back to work for the Rainbows against the Broncos of the West Coast Conference.

Hawai'i coach Mike Trapasso said he will staff today's game. The Rainbows still have well-rested pitchers who weren't used from the weekend's series against San Jose State. Alex Capaul is the probable starter today. He made one start back in the UC Irvine series, going just four innings, allowing four runs in a 5-4 loss.

Josh Slaats, Ryan Davis and Alex Myers did not pitch in the SJSU series. Harrison Kuroda and Linsky also should be rested. Jesse Moore, who pitched three innings Sunday, and Spangler, who went 4 2/3 after Moore, are unlikely to be used today.

The Broncos were swept in a three-game conference series by San Diego over the weekend. The Toreros were ranked No. 23 by NCBWA last week and are No. 25 by Baseball America this week. Santa Clara enters with a .297 team batting average and averages six runs per game. But the Broncos are without catcher Tommy Medica (.429 after nine games), who had a season-ending shoulder separation last month. His successor, Geoff Klein, leads the team with a .374 batting average and 35 RBI. He shares the team lead with outfielder Matt Long with three home runs.

Third baseman Vinnie Catricala continues to be the only Rainbow batting over .300 at .349. First baseman Kevin Macdonald leads the team with 26 RBI and outfielder Kolten Wong leads with five home runs and six steals.
