New Jersey teen dies after unsupervised boxing match

Associated Press

JERSEY CITY, N.J. — A 14-year-old New Jersey boy taking part in an unsupervised boxing match with another teen this week collapsed and died after being hit in the chest.

An autopsy showed Ian Artola of Jersey City may have died from pre-existing heart condition, but authorities said Thursday that a final determination may not be made for several weeks.

Hudson Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said Artola and another 14-year-old boy were boxing Wednesday at a Jersey City park when Artola collapsed. Several other teens who were watching the match then tried to help Artola and called for medical help, but Artola could not be revived and was pronounced dead a short time later.

DeFazio said it appears that both boys were wearing boxing gloves but not protective headgear.
