The University of Hawai'i-Hilo has turned on the first in a series of photovoltaic panels to promote energy efficiency.

The solar panels are on the building that houses the school's Kipuka Native Hawaiian Student Center.

The panels generate approximately 10.15 kilowatts of energy.

Gail Makuakane-Lundin, Kipuka director, secured funding for the project from the U.S. Department of Education.

The panels were purchased several years ago, but the project was delayed while details of an interconnectivity agreement between the university and Hawaii Electric Light Co. were worked out.
