Kauai police testing contents of suspicious containers found at marketplace

Advertiser Staff

LIHUE — Kauai police said today they are testing the contents of two suspicious containers found last night at the Coconut Marketplace in Waipouli.

Police said a security guard found the containers on a sidewalk in the course of a routine check at about 10 p.m.

Police officers and the Kauai Fire Department's hazardous materials teams responded and the area was sealed off overnight.

An explosive ordnance disposal unit from Schofield Barracks was contacted last night and arrived on Kauai this morning.

The Army unit arrived about 10 a.m., examined the containers and took steps to ensure they were safe for the Hazmat team to handle.

The Hazmat team evaluated the contents of the containers, then turned them over to police, who brought the containers to headquarters for further testing.
