Arizona ace Brandon Webb is headed to the 15-day disabled list with tightness in his pitching shoulder.

The Diamondbacks decided to make the move, retroactive to Tuesday, after Webb tested his shoulder by playing catch yesterday morning.

"I feel like we're making progress on it, but we just need a little more time to make sure it's totally good," Webb said.

The right-hander is confident the injury will heal quickly.

"There's no concern," he said. "The MRIs are all good. I mean, if there's no structural damage, there's nothing to worry about."

The Diamondbacks said they would make a corresponding roster move before today's game against St. Louis.

Arizona manager Bob Melvin said the Diamondbacks wanted to be cautious with Webb, who won the 2006 NL Cy Young Award and finished runner-up the last two years. Webb has been Arizona's workhorse since 2004, pitching at least 208 innings in each of the past five seasons.

ELSEWHERE

Cubs: Chicago got some good news on the ailing right shoulder of catcher Geovany Soto yesterday, and now expect him to return to the lineup Wednesday. Cubs manager Lou Piniella said Soto could be available as a pinch runner or pinch hitter earlier, but only in an emergency.

Also, right fielder Milton Bradley left yesterday's game against Milwaukee with a right groin strain after he came up limping while trying to run from second to third base in the fourth inning.

Rays: Tampa Bay made room for center fielder B.J. Upton to rejoin the team by optioning outfielder Matt Joyce to Triple-A Durham yesterday. Upton, who underwent offseason surgery on his left shoulder, is expected to be activated from the 15-day disabled list for today's home opener against the New York Yankees.

Braves: Atlanta left-hander Tom Glavine ended his minor league start with Double-A Mississippi early yesterday after experiencing shoulder discomfort. The 43-year-old Glavine had expected to throw 50 to 60 pitches, but left after only 36 in two innings. He gave up three hits, including a solo home run, with one walk and no strikeouts against Carolina.

Indians: Cleveland left-hander Scott Lewis will not throw for 5 to 10 days because of a strained left forearm. Trainer Lonnie Soloff confirmed yesterday that an MRI showed no structural damage but some inflammation.
