Barricade situation on Kuakini Street resolved peacefully

Advertiser Staff

A 44-year-old Honolulu man was in police custody this morning after he allegedly threatened neighbors and police officers before barricading himself in his Kuakini Street apartment late last night.

Police reported being called to the apartment at 108 S. Kuakini St. about 9:20 p.m. Neighbors told police the man had been throwing beer bottles and threatening them.

When officers approached the man, he allegedly threatened them and retreated into his apartment, police said.

As officers approached the apartment, the man broke out a window and threw a large knife at one of the officers, police said.

At that point, the man barricaded himself in the apartment and refused to comply with the officers' instructions, police said.

SWAT team members and hostage negotiators were sent to the scene and the man surrendered peacefully a little past 1 a.m. this morning.

He was arrested on suspicion of three counts of first-degree terroristic threatening, two counts of second-degree terroristic threatening and one count of misdemeanor criminal property damage.
