Firefighters battling large Nanakuli brushfire

Advertiser Staff

Honolulu and federal firefighters are battling a wildfire in the hills above Nanakuli that so far has scorched about 200 acres.

The fire was reported at about 5:20 this afternoon at the end of Lualualei Naval Road. Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Capt. Terry Seelig said the blaze was in two areas, one running up the side of the mountain and the other makai of that blaze.

At 6:30 p.m., Seelig said fire officials estimated that it would take another four hours before the fire could be contained. He said the fire was not threatening any property and there were no reports of injuries.

Seelig said about 45 county firefighters and the Air One helicopter were joined by federal firefighters to fight the blaze. He said the fire was fueled by brisk winds, which helped spread the flames.
