NBA: Kings' co-owner asks Nuggets' Martin for apology

Associated Press

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Kings center Spencer Hawes will miss Sacramento's season finale today after straining his troublesome left knee on a scary play in Denver.

Hawes was injured in a collision with Nuggets forward Kenyon Martin in the first quarter of a loss at Denver on Monday. Hawes' knee swelled after he landed awkwardly, and Martin received a flagrant foul.

An MRI Tuesday revealed only a knee strain, according to a statement released by the team.

The Sacramento Bee reported Wednesday that Kings co-owner Joe Maloof called Martin's actions "thuggery" and said Martin "needs to apologize to Spencer and our organization."

Hawes underwent microfracture surgery on the knee several years ago, and had further surgery to repair a torn meniscus in the same knee 18 months ago.
