Barricaded man surrenders after four-hour standoff

A 44-year-old man surrendered peacefully to police yesterday morning following a four-hour standoff at a Kuakini Street apartment building.

Police arrested him on suspicion of terroristic threatening after he allegedly threatened neighbors and police officers before barricading himself in his apartment.

Police were called to the apartment at 108 S. Kuakini St. about 9:20 p.m. Monday. Neighbors told police the man had been throwing beer bottles and threatening them.

When officers approached the man, he allegedly threatened them and retreated into his apartment, police said. As officers approached, the man broke out a window and threw a large knife at one of the officers, police said.

SWAT team officers and hostage negotiators were sent to the scene and the man surrendered peacefully a little past 1 a.m. yesterday.
