WAILUKU
Feedback welcome on 'Iao Stream Flood Control Project

An informational session will be held tomorrow on the draft environmental assessment for proposed modifications to the 'Iao Stream Flood Control Project.

Representatives from the Department of Public Works and the Army Corps of Engineers will be available from 5:30 to 6 p.m. for informal discussion, with a formal presentation at 6 p.m. and a public comment period to follow. The event will be held at the Velma McWayne Santos Community Center in Wailuku.

The flood control project, completed in 1981, has experienced repeated erosion from high stream flows that have damaged the levees and stream channel invert, causing undermining and a gradual collapse. The draft assessment proposes modifications to reduce flood damage and further undermining of the stream bank and levees.

For more information, contact county civil engineer Joe Krueger at 808-270-7745. To comment on the draft assessment, e-mail project manager Nani Shimabuku at iaostream@usace.army.mil.
