The 'Iolani softball team rode the merry-go-round to conjure up some two-out magic in the second inning yesterday against St. Francis.

The Raiders scored seven runs in the second, including three that were walked in, to beat St. Francis, 10-7, in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu game at Ala Wai Field.

'Iolani, ranked No. 1 in The Advertiser's Top 10 poll, improved to 8-1. St. Francis dropped to 3-6.

The Raiders loaded the bases in the second against Pitisi Tualau after Kelli Ann Lum was hit by pitch, Marisa Terayama doubled to left-center and Amanda McCaskill walked.

'Iolani nearly blew the opportunity to score when the courtesy runner at third was picked off by Troubadours catcher Briana Tovio-Asato and a strikeout, but the next seven batters reached.

Jana Tokuhama, Kirsten Namba and Lum drew bases-loaded walks in the inning, Kim Souza had a two-run single, and Terayama had an RBI single with another run scoring when the center fielder mishandled the ball.

"Pitisi, she was struggling with her strikes so we were very patient," said 'Iolani coach Lance Watanabe. "We had a base-running mistake, but we scored a lot after two (outs), so I give the girls credit for being selective and coming through with some big hits."

In all, 'Iolani drew six walks in the second and had just three hits.

"She actually had trouble this whole week," St. Francis coach Mark Glushenko said of Tualau. "The girls always try to pick her up, so I think she'll be back."

On Monday, 'Iolani beat the Troubadours, 6-0.

The Raiders tacked on three more in the third on three hits and two errors to take a 10-1 lead.

Souza finished 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, and Terayama went 3-for-4 with two doubles for 'Iolani.

"I wasn't doing well in my hitting the past couple games," said Terayama, a sophomore. "The coaches really helped me. I just had to relax and go for it."

Terayama added she "had to stay down and keep my chin down."

'Iolani's Brittney Guro worked the first four innings for the victory, allowing one hit, an unearned run and two walks with four strikeouts.

"Brittney was laboring today," Watanabe said. "She wasn't hitting her spots as much and we thought with a big lead we'd let our backup pitchers have some experience."

The Troubadours scored two in the fifth on four hits and two errors. Tovio-Asato had a run-scoring triple and a throwing error on the Raiders catcher on a pickoff throw to third plated another run.

St. Francis scored four more in the sixth to make it 10-7. The Troubadours had two hits and benefitted from two errors in the inning.

"I think the girls kind of got down even after that for a little while," Glushenko said of the Raiders' seven-run second. "But at least they didn't quit. They still fought back and I told them that's what I was proud of."

Nani Taniguchi, the third 'Iolani pitcher, finished off the victory with a perfect seventh.
