Kaiser's Spiker wins nationals

Advertiser Staff

Four Hawai'i high school wrestlers recently came home with national championships from tournaments in Reno, Nev. and Kansas City, Mo.

Kaiser senior Jason Spiker won the 18-and-under, 103-pound title at the Reno World of Wrestling National Championships, April 3 through April 5, winning all four of his matches by pin.

In his opening match, Spiker led 15-0, when he pinned Tony Nguyen of California in the second period. Spiker then pinned Chris Debroy — an Arizona state runner-up — in the first period of their second-round match.

In the semifinals, Spiker pinned Idaho state runner-up Kolten Glider in the second period. And in the championship match, Spiker pinned Brandon Bowers — the No. 1-ranked 103-pound wrestler in Oregon — at 42 seconds.

Wrestlers from California, Texas, Florida, Washington, Oregon, Arizona, Idaho and other states competed in Spiker's weight class.

Spiker won the 103-pound state title in February.

At the Brute/adidas Nationals in Kansas City, three Punahou seniors won their weight classes: Reid Oshiro at 122 pounds, Maika Nagata at 128 and Arnold Toriumi at 133.

Buffanblu freshman Todd Murakawa took second place at 119 after losing to the Iowa state champion by two points.

Punahou junior Jordan Ng took third place at 115 by winning six straight matches after losing early in the championship bracket, and freshman Bryant Fukushima took sixth after losing his medal match to a state place-winner from Missouri.

Buffanblu sophomore Evan Yamamoto earned All-America status by finishing seventh at 106, and eighth-grader LJ Remillard took third in the 158-pound weight class.

Sophomore Evan Johnson lost two matches, one in overtime and another by one point.
