$25,000 OHA grant to aid heritage community center

Kapolei Community Development Corp. has obtained a $25,000 grant from the Office of Hawaiian Affairs' Community-Based Economic Development program for a heritage community center in East Kapolei.

The nonprofit organization was established by homesteaders for the betterment of communities in the 'Ewa/Kapolei Hawaiian homestead region.

The center is expected to have space for community and family events supported by certified kitchen facilities, as well as offices and classrooms.

"Partnerships with educational organizations will provide programs for community to engage in cultural education and activities, participate in classes for economic and financial literacy, and learn how to better care for themselves," said Shirley Swinney, corporation president.
