Vladimir Guerrero wasn't able to throw. Now he can't hit, either, and the Los Angeles Angels must play without their valuable slugger for at least one month — if not more.

Guerrero has a torn muscle in his chest and was placed on the 15-day disabled list before yesterday's game at Minnesota. An examination in Los Angeles by noted team orthopedist Dr. Lewis Yocum revealed the pectoral tear, a day after an MRI test showed a strain and kept him out of the lineup for the first time this season.

Manager Mike Scioscia said Guerrero would be re-evaluated in a month, but he expressed optimism toward the recovery of the eight-time All-Star outfielder and said Guerrero can heal without surgery.

Guerrero first felt discomfort during an exhibition game April 2, and hadn't played in the field yet — only as the designated hitter. Before he left the team Thursday, Guerrero said through an interpreter the injury was only affecting him in the field and not giving him problems at the plate.

IN REMEBERANCE

FUNERAL SERVICE FOR ANGELS' ADENHART

With friends and fans arriving in baseball gear, Los Angles Angels pitcher Nick Adenhart was remembered yesterday at a funeral service attended by thousands at his former high school.

Adenhart starred at Williamsport (Md.) High School before becoming a major leaguer. Those wearing baseball clothing at the service did so at the request of the family.

The 22-year-old pitcher was killed in a car accident in California on April 9 hours after pitching six scoreless innings against the Boston Red Sox. He was buried yesterday in a private ceremony.

The memorial service was held in the school gym. Outside, a large circle containing Adenhart's name and his No. 34 with the Angels was displayed.

Courtney Stewart, 20, and Henry Pearson, 25, also died in the crash.

ELSEWHERE

Giants: San Francisco rookie pitcher Joe Martinez rejoined his teammates yesterday for the first time since getting hit in the head by a Mike Cameron line drive last week. Martinez, who was hospitalized for nearly a week and suffered a concussion and three small hairline fractures on the right side of his head as a result of the April 9 game against Milwaukee, was dressed in street clothes as he walked through the clubhouse before the Giants' game against Arizona.

Royals: Kansas City third baseman Alex Gordon could be out of the lineup for half the season after having surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right hip. The surgery was performed yesterday in Colorado, and Royals manager Trey Hillman said the recovery time is 10 to 12 weeks.

Cardinals: St. Louis called up right-hander P.J. Walters to help fill a hole left in the rotation when Chris Carpenter went on the disabled list. Walters started yesterday's game against the Chicago Cubs. Carpenter is out for up to two months with a torn oblique muscle.

Nationals: Washington placed shortstop Cristian Guzman on the 15-day disabled list with a left hamstring strain. He was hitting a team-high .515 (17-for-33) with four RBIs.
