Advertiser Staff

Two people were in serious condition yesterday afternoon following a one-vehicle accident on Kamehameha Highway near Hale'iwa.

The accident prompted police to shut down Kamehameha Highway in the south-bound direction at the Wahiawa end of Joseph P. Leong Highway. The road was reopened by 4 p.m., police said.

According to Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Capt. Earle Kealoha, the vehicle appeared to have been heading toward Hale'iwa when the driver lost control and veered into some brush off the roadway.

The driver, a woman in her 20s, was initially taken to a local hospital in critical condition, according to Emergency Medical Services spokesman Bryan Cheplic. The passenger, a man in his 20s, was taken to the hospital in serious condition.

Shortly before 4 p.m., police said the woman had been upgraded to serious condition.

2 H-1 WEST-BOUND LANES CLOSED THROUGH TONIGHT FOR REPAIRS

The two right lanes of the west-bound H-1 Freeway between North-South Road and the Makakilo interchange remain closed until 8 p.m. today for concrete repairs.

The closure, which began Friday at 9 p.m., resulted in substantial traffic backups yesterday. The state Department of Transportation advises motorists to use alternative routes such as Farrington Highway.
