Alaka'i Aglipay's two-out, two-strike single to center field in the bottom of the seventh inning brought home pinch-runner Travis Ganiko from second base to lift Punahou to a stunning 3-2 victory over 'Iolani yesterday morning at Ala Wai Field.

The win — combined with Kamehameha's 11-1 triumph over Maryknoll later in the day — left 'Iolani and Kamehameha each 12-2 and tied for first place in the regular-season standings. They will meet at 3:30 p.m. tomorrow at Ala Wai to determine the ILH's regular-season title and automatic state tournament berth.

Punahou (8-6) had already clinched the No. 4 seed for the upcoming league tournament, and Buffanblu coach Eric Kadooka said his team approached yesterday as preparation for Wednesday's tourney opener, using five pitchers throwing no more than two innings each.

"Our main focus is Wednesday, and we had a plan coming in," Kadooka said. "This win should be a big help going into the tournament. We're still young, and we gotta get our confidence."

Punahou got its confidence early yesterday, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning after Brian Suite singled to center, stole second base and scored after Tyler Hanzawa's single was misplayed in left field.

The Buffanblu made it 2-0 in the third after Evan Lim walked, pinch-runner Roy Fuchigami advanced to second as Tyler Young was hit by a pitch, and scored on Aglipay's bloop double that skipped in between the center and right fielders.

The Raiders cut the lead in half in the fourth, as Buen Hatanaka reached on an infield error, moved to second on Reyn Nagamine's sacrifice bunt and scored on an errant throw after JR Bunda's infield single.

'Iolani then tied it in the seventh after Grant Iwamoto led off with a walk, courtesy runner Eric Molnar advanced to second on Sean Nada's sacrifice bunt, and scored on pinch-hitter Trent Miyashiro's single to center.

But Punahou got a 4-6-3 double play to end the rally.

In the bottom of the seventh, Lim had a one-out single to right and moved to second on Young's walk, setting up Aglipay's line single on a 2-2 pitch. Ganiko sped home and slid safely ahead of the throw from center field.
