Keaau woman killed in one-car crash

Advertiser Staff

Hawai'i County police today identified the person killed in a one-car crash Sunday as Doreen T.H. Kaina, 20, of Kea'au.

Kaina died of injuries sustained in a crash at the intersection of Paradise Drive and 25th Avenue in Puna's Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivision.

Police said Kaina was driving a 2009 Chrysler four-door sedan and traveling east on Paradise Drive when the car crossed the centerline and hit a utility pole. Police were called at 6:35 a.m.

Kaina was taken to Hilo Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 9:05 a.m. A 19-year-old male passenger in the vehicle received minor injuries and refused medical treatment.

Police said excessive speed was a factor in the crash.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers initiated a coroner's inquest case and ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Police ask anyone with information about this crash to call Officer Robert Pauole at 961-8119.

Because the crash occurred on a private road, the death is not counted on the county's official traffic fatality count.
