Hawaii softball sweeps on road

Advertiser Staff

Stephanie Ricketts and Courtney Baughman combined for consecutive shutouts as the University of Hawai'i softball team swept Santa Clara, 12-0 and 9-0, yesterday at Santa Clara, Calif.

Ricketts fired a one-hitter in the first game that was stopped after five innings due to the mercy rule at West Valley College Softball Field.

In the second game, Baughman pitched four innings, and Ricketts finished the final three innings. Both allowed one hit to Santa Clara (5-42) in the contest.

The offense tallied 31 hits — including six doubles and seven home runs — in the two nonconference games.

Amanda Tauali'i and Tanisha Milca both launched a pair of homers, while Traci Yoshikawa (grand slam), Clare Warwick, and Kanani Pu'u-Warren hit one apiece.

The 'Bows (24-21) were led on offense by Tauali'i, who finished 5 for 8 with three runs scored and four RBIs. Warwick also went 5 for 8 with three runs scored and a double.

STROTMAN HONORED

University of Hawai'i outside hitter Joseph Strotman has been named Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men's volleyball Player of the Week, the conference office announced yesterday.

Strotman had a career-high 30 kills and 12 digs in the final match of the year for the Warriors, a 3-1 upset of fifth-ranked Southern California on Saturday at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The junior from San Gabriel, Calif., recorded 13 kills and hit .310 in the first match of the series Friday against USC. Overall, Strotman had 43 kills in two matches for a 6.14 kills per set average.

The Player of the Week honor is the first of Strotman's career and the first for a Hawai'i player this season.
