Bounty hunter Chapman nabs man who fired at him

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Colorado Springs police say TV bounty hunter Duane "Dog" Chapman today apprehended a man who shot at him last night.

The Colorado Springs Gazette reported that Chapman took 35-year-old Hoang Ngyuen into custody today without incident.

"It was a matter of public safety," Chapman told Hawaii publicist Mona Wood. "This guy had a gun and was going to use it to stay out of jail. We had to catch him before anyone else got hurt. We were not going to give up until we found him."

Chapman also disputed reports that Ngyuen's capture was without incident.

Chapman said Nguyen attempted to flee a second time and had to be subdued.

Colorado Springs police said at least one shot was fired at Chapman and bail bondsman Bobby Brown last night when they tried to apprehend Nguyen at an apartment complex.

Nguyen reportedly fired at least one shot before fleeing on a motorcycle.

No injuries were reported.

Police say Chapman and Brown were armed only with pepper-spray guns.

Wood said Chapman wanted to pass along his appreciation for support from Hawaii.

"I was overwhelmed with the response we received almost immediately and want to say 'mahalo' for everyone's prayers and kind comments," Chapman said. "We are all fine and humbled by everyone's sincere concern."

Chapman is best known for the TV reality series "Dog the Bounty Hunter" on the A&E network. The show was taping an episode when the shooting incident took place.
