Hilo second in PacWest

The University of Hawai'i-Hilo men's golf team finished second yesterday in the 2009 Hawaiian Airlines Pacific West Conference Championships in Antioch, Calif.

The Vulcans shot a final-round 291 to finish at 872. Grand Canyon won the eight-team tournament with 290—866. Hawai'i Pacific (296—897) was fourth, Brigham Young-Hawai'i (312—906) sixth and Chaminade (400—1200) eighth.

Hilo's Logan Goulding shot a final-round 1-under 71 to finish a three-way tie for first at 215. However, Academy of Art's Matthew Garcia won the title in a playoff. Hilo's Zady Ari, who opened the tournament with a 66, finished fourth after shooting 74—216.

Adam Istvan led HPU with 69—218 (tie for ninth), Doug Bischoff led BYUH with 78—223 (tie for 15th) and Layne Morita led Chaminade with 72—219 (tie for 10th).

'BOWS STAY IN SEVENTH

Despite improving by 11 strokes from the first round, the University of Hawai'i women's golf team remained in seventh yesterday at the Western Athletic Conference Championships in Reno, Nev.

The Rainbow Wahine shot 308 for a two-round total of 51-over 627. San Jose State leads the seven-team field at 2-under 574 after shooting 289.

Carolina Perez leads UH after a 1-over 73. She is tied for 15th at 8-over 152. San Jose State's Katrina Delen Briones leads with 74—141.
