MILILANI — In an O'ahu Interscholastic Association baseball playoff game of inches, Mililani squeaked past Castle, 1-0, yesterday to advance to today's quarterfinal round.

Mililani, the OIA Red Conference West Division's No. 4 seed, improved to 7-6 in league play and will travel to East No. 1 Kailua (9-3) at 3:30 p.m. The winner will receive an automatic state tournament berth.

The Trojans scored yesterday's only run in the bottom of the third inning, after Jordan Queja singled to right field with one out, stole second and advanced to third on the errant throw before scoring on Joey Aquino's single to right.

The East No. 5 seed Knights (5-8) threatened in the sixth, but a runner was thrown out at third after trying to advance on a two-out, ball-four pitch in the dirt.

"I blocked it and I saw the guy going, so I just threw it," said Mililani catcher Jacob Matsukawa.

Castle coach Jason Berinobis said the situation could have been ideal, with No. 3 batter Bryson Luke, who was 2-for-2, coming to bat.

"That was big, because the runner on base was one of our fastest guys," Berinobis said. "All we needed to do was put the ball in play."

The Knights threatened again in the seventh, when Luke led off with a single to left and advanced to second on a wild pitch. But reliever Travis Inouye — who came in for starter Preston Pacolba when the inning began — got a flyout to right, a grounder to third and a strikeout to end the game.

On the groundout to third, the throw went off the bag and first baseman Chad Bolibol made a sweeping tag on the batter's helmet. Pacolba, who allowed five hits in six innings, also got help from two double plays plus a relay throw from left field to nab a runner trying to stretch a single to a double.

"The little things we worked on every day built up, and the kids bought into what we were doing," said first-year Trojans coach Mark Hirayama. "It's nice to see all that hard work pay off in a win like this."
