Swimmer hospitalized after being pulled out of water

A man was in critical condition after he was pulled in an unresponsive state from Hanauma Bay yesterday afternoon.

The man, possibly in his 60s, was seen floating in the bay shortly before 1 p.m., said Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the city Department of Emergency Services. Lifeguards reached the man and brought him ashore, where they began CPR, Cheplic said. He said the lifeguards were able to restore the man's pulse and that he began to breathe on his own.

Ambulance personnel stabilized the man, and he was taken to a hospital in critical condition.
