Isle Marines to provide support for ANZAC Day ceremonies at Punchbowl

Advertiser Staff

Marines from Camp Smith and Marine base in Kaneohe will participate in the annual ANZAC Commemoration tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl.

ANZAC Day is observed in honor of Australia-New Zealand Army Corps troops who died in the battle for Gallipoli, Turkey, in 1915 at the start of World War I.

It has since come to honor all the sacrifices made by service members in the Australian and New Zealand Armed Forces.

This is the 37th year Marines in Hawaii have provided the military support for ANZAC Day, including the Ceremonial Honor Guard, rifle firing detail and the U.S. Marine Corps Forces Pacific Band.

The ceremony will be hosted by David Binns, Consul-General of Australia, and John Mataira, Consul-General of New Zealand from Los Angeles.

Wreaths will be placed by, among others, representatives of the military in Hawaii, including Admiral Timothy Keating, Commander of U.S. Pacific Command, and Lieutenant General Keith J. Stalder, Commander of U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Pacific.
