Advertiser Staff

Greg Garcia's one out single scored Jeffrey Van Doornum with the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th inning and No. 20 Hawai'i knocked off New Mexico State, 8-7, to salvage a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader split tonight at Presley Askew Field in Las Cruces, N.M.

New Mexico State won the first game, 16-6, in eight innings.

The Rainbows (26-15 overall, 9-5 WAC) remain atop the conference with the split.

Kevin Macdonald's team-leading 11th home run of the season in the top of the ninth forced extra innings. He also started the game-ending first-to-short-back-to-first double play.

In the top of the 10th, Van Doornum led off with a single to right, took second on Ryan Morford's sacrifice and scored on Garcia's single to left. Garcia took second on the throw home. Sean Montplaisir walked. The runners advanced when Vinnie Catricala flied out to deep right. But Macdonald struck out to leave the runners at second and third.

The Aggies threatened in the bottom of the 10th. Jeffrey Farnham led off with a single to left and took second on Nate Shaver's single to center. Bryan Marquez flied out to deep left, advancing Farnham to third. But Leo Aguirre grounded to first baseman Macdonald for a game-ending double play.

Jared Alexander (2-1) gave up no runs and five hits in 2 1/3 innings of relief for the Rainbows.

Jake Wilson (2-2) allowed the deciding run in one inning of work for the Aggies (33-10, 8-7).

Hawai'i's bullpen squandered a 5-0 lead by allowing seven runs in the eighth, spoiling six shutout innings from starter Nate Klein.

Hawai'i took a 1-0 lead in the first. Montplasir singled with one out and took second on Catricala's single. Macdonald's single to right scored Montplaisir.

The Rainbows scored again in the second. Christian Johnson led off with a single to center and Van Doornum walked. Both advanced on Ryan Morford's sacrifice. Johnson scored when Garcia grounded out to short to make it 2-0.

Hawai'i increased their lead in the fourth when Johnson walked with one out. After Van Doornum flied out to right, Morford homered to left-center to make it 4-0.

Catricala led off the seventh with a homer to center to make it 5-0. It was his eighth homer of the season.

The Aggies sent 12 batters to the plate in a seven-run seventh to take the lead. Bryan Marquez led off with a single and took third on Leo Aguirre's single to right. Jared Jordan's single to right scored Maruqez and sent Aguirre to third. Connor Little was pulled for Josh Slaats. Chuck Howard doubled to left that scored Aguiirre and sent Jordan to third, pulling NMSU to 5-2. Wade Reynoso walked to load the bases. But Slaats came back to strike out Kyle Decater and pinch hitter Mike Sodders. Jeffrey Farnham's RBI single reloaded the bases and pulled NMSU to 5-3. Nate Shaver walked to force in a run to make it 5-4. Slaats was replaced by Jared Alexander, who was scheduled to start Sunday. Marquez's two-run single to center moved Shaver to third and put NMSU ahead, 6-5. Aguirre's single to right scored Shaver and moved Marquez to third, making it 7-5 before pinch hitter Steven Anderson struck out to end the inning.

But the Rainbows tied it in the top of the ninth off closer Erik Nyquist. With one out, Montplaisir doubled to center, but Catricala popped out to short. Macdonald then ripped a homer to center to tie the game at 7. Wong doubled to right and took third on a wild pitch before Landon Hernandez walked to put runners at the corners. But Johnson flied out to right to end the inning.
