RIFF REPORT

The glorious, deluxe physical box set isn't dead. Thankfully. Some of us still prefer to hear music coming out of high-end stereo speakers instead of tinny little earbuds. Jane's Addiction has a new rarities set out through Rhino, called "A Cabinet of Curiosities." It's a limited-edition set packaged in a wooden case with three CDs and one DVD packed with demos and live performances. To satisfy vinyl fetishists, Rhino is also giving record spinners 180-gram editions of "Nothing's Shocking" (1988) and "Ritual De Lo Habitual" (1990). Find out more and order at rhino.com.

New York-based Easy Star All-Stars have recorded critically acclaimed reggae tributes to Pink Floyd and Radiohead. They are following up those popular efforts with a new take on the Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band." "Easy Star's Lonely Hearts Dub Band" includes an impressive array of guest artists, including Steel Pulse, Matisyahu, Michael Rose (Black Uhuru), Luciano, U Roy, Bunny Rugs (Third World), Ranking Roger (English Beat) and Sugar Minott. The first single "With a Little Help from My Friends," featuring Luciano, is exclusively on iTunes. Hear it at http://media.popmatters.com/downloads/EasyStarAll-Stars_WithALittleHelp.mp3.

Shining bright in the Americana constellation, the Avett Brothers take bluegrass and rural string music and turn it on its head by adding Beatlesque harmonies, smart-alecky lyrics, rock energy and an indie sensibility. The North Carolina band recently moved to Columbia Records from indie Ramseur. New album "I and Love and You" is set to drop in July. Check them out on Bruce Springsteen's "Hangin' Out on E Street" page, covering "Glory Days": www.brucespringsteen.net/news/hanginout.html.
